1.0       Closed captioning green LED light indicator

Function:  Illuminates when the closed captioning button is pressed.

Reasoning:  The green LED light helps with visibility and mental models.  It’s a highly visible green so you will be aware that it is on, and that the closed captioning functioning.  The user knows it belongs to the closed captioning button because of the Gestalt principle of closure.  Not all television shows have closed captioning, so the letter may not be on the screen the green led lets the user know that the device is functioning properly.  Also a common metal model is that when something is on, it lights up.  Like a stove or microwave for example.

1.1       Closed captioning button

Function:  Turns on closed captioning.

Reasoning:  Our company is named Streamline.  Our product Vision HD is just that; streamlined.  We took the most common controls from a convention in home TV and applied them to our product in the simplest manner possible.  There are four buttons on the face of the product, the most commonly pressed would naturally be the volume and channel changing buttons.  Thus the closed caption button is placed above them, and not directly where the users thumb would rest.

1.2       Volume button

Function:  When depressed, allows the user to change volume via the top two shoulder buttons.

Reasoning:  The Vision HD has built in fault constraints so there is no accidental use.  The volume button must be held down to initiate a volume change, using the two shoulder buttons.  As potential users told us, volume and channel changing would be the most commonly used buttons.  We implemented this into our design by placing them exactly where the user could comfortably grip the device and use the buttons.

1.3       High Definition Screen

Function:  Displays all video.

Reasoning:  The purpose of the device is to watch TV.  A screen is pretty essential to the viewing experience.  However, we went beyond just a screen.  We encompassed a high definition, all digital display, for the most crisp and colorful video.  To hook users we needed the latest and greatest technology so we encompassed the best technology of today.

1..4       Battery red LED light indicator

Function:  Alert the user of a low battery.

Reasoning:  We want to alert the user of everything that’s happening with the Vision HD portable television.  A user needs to know whether they need to plug in and recharge their device.  If the unit were to just shut off, we would receive thousands of complaints and queries about a possible broken product.  This was all solved by a small LED light to tell the user that the unit is running low on juice.  It is dimly lit when 2 hours battery is left, so it alerts the user without obstructing there viewing pleasure.

1..5       Left shoulder button

Function:  Change volume/channel in a descending order.

Reasoning:  The most common mental model is when turning something left it decreases.  We conformed to this mental model with our left shoulder button.  It is raised from the unit for increased visibility.  This is important because it is not a button that is pressed.  It is a touch sensitive button.  It has no functionality unless the volume or channel buttons are pressed at the same time so there can be no accidental and unconscious use.

1.6       Right shoulder button

Function:  Change volume/channel in an ascending order.

Reasoning:  As stated above the mental model for turning something
to the right apply to our right shoulder button.

1.7       Power green LED light indicator

Function:  Illuminates when the power button is pressed, and unit is powered on.

Reasoning:  The green LED light helps with visibility and mental models.  It’s high contrast in regards to the rest of the system so the user will be aware that the light is on, and that the unit is powered on.  The user knows it belongs to the power on button because of the Gestalt principle of closure.  If there were a problem with the screen it would be difficult to tell if the Vision HD was on and operating.  The green light eradicates this by letting the user know the Vision is powered up, and hopefully working.

1.8       Power button

Function:  Turns on the Vision HD.

Reasoning:  The device is meant to be on to be enjoyed.  Thus we placed the power on button in the top right for convenience and visibility.  The button is out of the way enough so that when the unit is being held, there is no risk for accidental pushing.  Yet, the button is visible enough to alert the user of its presence, and the button is labeled with a conventional color and symbol to show the user it’s function.  Thus the closed caption button is placed above them, and not directly where the users thumb would rest.

1.9      Channel button

Function:  When depressed, allows the user to change the channel via the top two shoulder buttons.

Reasoning:  The Vision HD has built in fault constraints so there is no accidental use.  The channel button has the same constraints as the previously mentioned volume button.  As potential users told us, volume and channel changing would be the most commonly used buttons.  We implemented this into our design by placing them exactly where the user could comfortably grip the device and use the buttons.

2.0       Speakers

Function:  To produce sound.

Reasoning:  The Vision HD has dual speakers to give the best possible stereo sound.  The front mounting design is optimal because the projection of the sound corresponds directly with the high definition screens placement.

2.1       Headphone jack

Function:  Allow use of headphones

Reasoning:  The headphone jack lets the user have the control over an ever changing environment.  If the environment is loud, the user may plug in headphone to allow him to see hear the television.

2.2       Power charging port

Function:  Allow user to charge the device.

Reasoning:  The charger snaps into the charging jack on the top of the device allowing the cord to run freely behind Vision HD so that the users experience is not disrupted just because the device need to be plugged in.
